Rip Van Winkle, courtesy of openlibrary.org.
As with King Revata and Urashima, Rip Van Winkle’s travel through time is to the future. Luckily for him, it’s a not so distant future, and although some things are very distant, he is still able to connect with family.
I file this in the myth category because of the beings Rip meets on the mountain. Those bowling men of short stature whose game of nine pins sounds like thunder to mere mortals, and whose liquor can put a mortal to sleep for twenty years. That’s a myth if ever I heard one.
I read this story for the first time when preparing to write this post. My primary take-away? All college freshmen should read this book. The moral of the story is do not take (or sneak) drinks from strangers. 🙂
