Memoirs of the Twentieth Century, by Samuel Madden
I confess. I could not make it through the book. If I can find an easier copy to read, I will, but this – though free – is not an easy copy to read, at least for me.
The Wikipedia entry on the book, however, makes it sound interesting. Written in 1733, the novel describes the world in 1997 and 1998. Didn’t exactly get things right, but how could he? Makes me wonder how far off all of our “speculative fiction” for two hundred – or two thousand, or four thousand – years in the future will be, and how people in those eras will look on what we have written.
